In Hayward at The Arc’s Walpert Center

First Step Children’s Center  is a warm and diverse child development/child care program serving children 2 years of age up to child’s 5th birthday with mild to moderate disabilities or developmental delays. Children with a current Individualized Education Plan (IEP) are funded four hours daily.

First Step Children participating in activitiesOpen from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, First Step has been providing child care services in a multilingual environment for some 30 years under a state license. It is a play-based preschool emphasizing language, cognitive skills, fine/gross motor skills, and social-emotional needs.

Parents love First Step because they can continue working knowing that First Step teachers are credentialed, have more than 20 years experience and love kids!  Parents also know their child with special needs is in a safe, loving environment learning new skills every day – often exhibiting skills even doctors predicted would never develop.

Children participate in arts and crafts, story time, music, outdoor fun, enjoy hot lunches, nutritious snacks, and much more.  Your child will make choices, cooperate, and build on his or her social skills.
